EXPERIENCE

July 2020 - Present

Amazon Logistics

Operations Manager

The work culture here is highly competitive. Things get done on an immediate basis. I handle a lot of customers and every day is different because every day the problems are different. It always feels like day-1 here. We don’t have a set schedule, but there are deadlines for projects and all. There is always something new to look forward to each day.

June 2019 - December 2019

Genpact

Junior Analyst

This was my PS2. I did a project on supply chain optimization and load optimization. I was in the Kraft Heinz wing of Genpact, which is an FMGC company that is outsourcing the supply chain out of Genpact. My first project was based on maximizing the efficiency of a truck to carry load given the constraints such as weight or volume within Europe. My second project was about determining and reducing the lead time between the order placement to the delivery of the order. Since this is an FMGC sector, you need to move fast and make sure the shelf life for these products is good enough. I got to see the international supply chain and interacted with many people from the Netherlands, Poland, etc.

May 2019 - June2019

Arvind Limited

Supply Chain Intern

I got this opportunity by connecting to HR via LinkedIn. They called me for a discussion at their office and that interaction went pretty good. The work was mainly understanding how their supply chain management worked and how I could make it better. I did a documentation project with a little bit of kaizen implementation where improvement of their certain processes was done.

May 2018 - July 2018

Carborundum Universal Limited

Intern

It is a plant that makes sandpapers on a large scale. This exposed me to lean, logistics, and supply chain. I was interested as to how they were managing the shipping and getting the product across businesses, in India and abroad.

QnA

It is a mix of SCM and Operations. We make sure the packages are delivered to people on time or before time. My role is actually the last mile of the actual operations or the last leg of the transaction between vendor and customer. It is not just a desk job sitting in front of computers, we do have that for meets and presentations but another aspect is also that we deal with a lot of major stakeholders in the supply chain.
I was exposed to the field of operations during my Carborundum internship only. My CG wasn’t that great and I landed up in this firm for my PS1. In 3-1, I took the supply chain management course just to see whether I actually like this field or not. I had great seniors also who supported me and put a lot of perspective in me. That was when I realized I am interested in pursuing this. I used to search and read various articles, used to come up with various problem statements on my own, and spent a lot of time on problem-solving for various companies. My wingies and I used to brainstorm and discuss these problems. These conversations were very insightful and I sometimes used to note them down later.
Yes, my degree was very much related to operations and many things applicable in application. One of my colleagues at Amazon asked me my background once and on hearing BITS he said that's like getting a mini MBA and I kind of agree with that and it has some truth to it. Courses like manufacturing management and optimization, disciplinary electives like quality assurance, lean manufacturing, and maybe a couple of finance electives helped me gauge this field.
I was mostly interested in non-tech jobs like business analysts or business associates. Most of these were desk jobs but then I realized there were a couple of roles that came for operations and I knew I had to try. There weren't many people in BITS who were aware of these topics and I felt that I had a decent chance over there. I had a hunch as well that not a lot of people will be able to crack the interview based on the knowledge the role requires.
It was mainly through LinkedIn. Get in touch with people and try creating connections as they help a lot and go a long way.
There was a cost impact in the work which I did at my internships which piqued an interest in the recruiters. This really played to my strength. I sat for 5-6 companies and all of them asked me for my work at my internships and basically how I did what I did. Enough experience gives an edge and communicates achievements well.
Yes a lot. It is like you did all this by your own accord and without any push. You are able to command a group of people and get things done. POR gives an added advantage as you can mention what you did, what all impact it had, and what positive came out of it. As an example, I was the head of the literary club and we have this fest and it is a big deal for us. Managing such an event with more than 500 participants and generating revenue, act of self-initiated projects you have taken in terms of the campus itself, business impact, profits, etc. are some of the things which you can mention as it shows your caliber and strengths.
Not yet but sometimes I do feel I should give up but I try to look at the bigger picture though it is easier said than done. I see how many lives are impacted by my job, how many jobs are being created, putting smiles on people’s faces and all of this puts a lot of perspective as to how you are contributing to the whole business.
It isn’t a regret but I wish I could have done better in academics as my CG was low and I was scared about placements. But still, I can’t call it a regret and I was with that attitude that I am gonna do as much as I can with what I have and to the best of my capabilities.
It is very important to be yourself but at the same time be ready to adjust or change otherwise growth isn’t possible or it will be tough. Coming to operations, it is a really good field, and considering all the probabilities, you should look from different perspectives while dealing with problems. The biggest asset one can have here is curiosity.
